The Reiwa era, meaning "Beautiful Harmony," commenced on May 1, 2019, with the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito, Japan's 126th emperor and the first to be born after World War II. His ascension marked a ceremonial and symbolic milestone, as Naruhito became the first emperor in the Heisei period to inherit the throne through normal succession, following his father Emperor Akihito's historic voluntary abdication.
